Storytelling Walls

In the photographic series Storytelling Walls, the images by Mark De Roeck engage in a dialogue between past and present, reflecting on what we so often overlook. These photographs invite us to pause, to observe, and to discover the stories hidden behind everyday surfaces.

The walls tell stories that unfold within the boundaries of the photographic frame. These images reveal a layering that goes deeper than what is visible at first glance. The photographs are like a form of text, almost hieroglyphs, in which—by peeling back the layers—we uncover the depth of hidden narratives. Each layer offers a new texture, a new truth, a detail that might otherwise go unnoticed. It is a search for the ineffable, for that which lies behind the visible. The images highlight what we often pass by, paying tribute to the details we do not always see, yet which complete the story.

What makes these works so distinctive is the minimal depth they convey. The photographs unfold within a two-dimensional plane, the strict frame of the image. There is no room for distraction here—only a focus on the lines, planes, and colors that manifest within it.

It is a form of minimalism that is at once complex, because it tells far more than what we initially perceive. Every visual element is carefully chosen, as if it were a brushstroke in a painting.

There is also a particular attention to the poetry embedded in the images. The photographs are not simple representations of landscapes or interiors; they are moments in time itself, captured in a kind of stillness. The “flat” landscape is not merely a physical space, but also an echo of the past blending with the present. The faded colors evoke a sense of transience, as though preserved in a time capsule that invites us to ask: what remains, and why? What does transience tell us about the moments we ourselves may never have noticed?

In this work, you see how colors fade, how time seems to congeal. The carefully selected, restrained palettes create a sense of cohesion and calm, while simultaneously evoking a difference in time. The colors appear to have aged over the years, like a patina that carries a sense of mystery.

The images in this exhibition are like small paintings, capturing fleeting moments of everyday life in planes and lines. They offer not only a visual narrative but also open a door to an inner world where time does not move forward. It is an invitation to reflect, to see what is there, and above all: to look at what we have grown accustomed to overlooking.

Welcome to this world of silence, time, and layering. Welcome to the poetry of the storytelling walls.
